The title of Iyase of Benin is a prestigious and high-ranking position within the Benin Kingdom, historically recognized as the role equivalent to that of a Prime Minister. This title has a rich history, with many distinguished individuals holding it over the centuries. Traditionally, the Iyase is appointed as the most trusted advisor and confidant of the Oba, the king of Benin, and plays a crucial role in the governance and administration of the kingdom. The origins of the Iyase title can be traced back to the reign of Oba Ewedo, who introduced it during the time of Iyase Odige. It is important to note that this title is not hereditary, which means that it is awarded based on merit and loyalty rather than passed down through family lineage. Throughout history, several notable Iyases have served the Benin Kingdom, each contributing to its governance and cultural heritage. Key historical figures include Iyase Odigie, who served under four Obas—Ewedo, Oguola, Edoni, and Udagbedo.
Another significant figure is Iyase Okunbo, who also held the title under the reign of Oba Osemwede. Iyase Izomo is another prominent Iyase who served two Obas, Osemwede and Adolo. More recent holders of the title include Iyase Agho, Iyase Okoro Otun, and Iyase Sam O. U. Igbe, who have continued to influence the kingdom's administration under the more contemporary Obas of Benin. The Iyase title remains significant in modern times, as evidenced by its continued mention in contemporary historical accounts of the kingdom's leadership, tracing back to the era of Oba Ewedo. The legacy of the Iyase is woven into the very fabric of the Benin Kingdom's history, reflecting the evolving political landscape and the importance of trusted advisors in the governance of the kingdom.
